World’s Highest Motorable road Built in Ladakh at 19,300 feet by BRO

The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has constructed World’s Highest Motorable road in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region under the “Project Himank“. The road passing through Umling La Top has been built at height over 19,300 feet.

The length of the road is 54-km. It goes through Umling La Top and connects villages Chisumle and Demchok located 230km from Leh close to India-China border in eastern sector.

It will help in boosting the movements of troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the eastern sector. Demchok village is located at at Zero Line so the Objections were raised by China for road construction up to Demchok in 2016. This also increased the standoff between the Indian and Chinese armies in the area.

The new road is Highest Motorable road of World and also the highest ever constructed under Project Himank. Some other roads constructed at heights under Project Himank are Khardung La at an altitude of 17,900 ft and Chang La Pass at 17,695 ft in Leh by connecting Nubra valley and Durbuk valley in the cold desert.
