Till now India has 14 presidents. Here we are going to present list of presidents of India along with their history, term and other related information which is most commonly asked in the government examinations and candidates need to learn.

Basic information of president of India:

President of India is the Executive head of the states and is first Citizen of India. He or she should be at least 35 years old and must be eligible to become a lower house (Lok Sabha) member. 1st

Rajendra Prasad

1950 to 1962

Rajendra Prasad was from Bihar. He took charge as first president of India on 26 January, 1950, same day when constitution of India was adopted. He was also the president of the constitution preparing Constituent Assembly of India. He is the only president to serve for two consecutive terms and longest serving president of India (12 Years).

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

1962 to 1967

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was second in list of Presidents of India. He was erudite philosopher and teacher by profession. He was awarded with Bharat Ratna in 1954. Education system and academic development of the country took place at a faced pace during his tenure. Radhakrishnan was first non political president of India.

Zakir Husain

1967 to 1969

Zakir hussain was also from non political background same as Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and was also eminent scholar and educationist. He was first Muslim president of India and was the first president to die in office. Before being elected as third president of India, he had served as Bihar state governor from 1957 to 1962 and after that je became Vice President of India and hold the position from 1962 to 1967.

In 1963, Zakir hussain was awarded with India’s highest civilian Award Bharat Ratna in 1963.

V V Giri

1969 – 1969(acting president) & 24 August 1969 – 24 August 1974 (Elected)

VV Giri was fourth in the list of president of India. He was selected as acting president of India after the death of Zakir Husain but he could only serve for couple of months from 3 May 1969 to 20 July 1969. He resigned from the post to participate in upcoming president’s elections to become a full time President of India. Muhammad Hidayatulla was elected as acting president after his resignation.

Then VV Giri won the elections as independent candidate and became fourth president of India. He was honored with Bharat Ratna in 1975.

 

5th

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed

24 August 1974 to 11 February 1977

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was fifth president of India and was the second president to die in the office. State of emergency in India was declared during his term. He had joined Indian National Congress and also participated in Indian Freedom Movement.

 

Acting President

Basappa Danappa Jatti

11 February 1977 to 25 July 1977

Basappa Danappa Jatti became president of India after the death of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed in office. He was vice president of India, so was appointed as president after Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s death.  Earlier he was also the Chief Minister of Mysore.

 

6th President

Neelam Sanjiva Reddy

Term – 25 July 1977 to 25 July 1982

Sixth president of India was Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. He started his political career by joining Indian National Congress party. Before becoming president he has served as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Two times Speaker of Lok Sabha and as a Union Minister. He was the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and was youngest president of India.

 

7th President

Giani Zail Singh

Term – 25 July 1982 to 25 July 1987

Giani Zail Singh was seventh in the presidents list of India. He had political background and was member of Indian national Congress party. Under INC he had held many positions in Union Cabinet. He was also Home Minister of India. Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots happened in India during Giani Zail Singh’s term as president.

 

8th President

Ramaswamy Venkataraman

Term – 25 July 1987 to 25 July 1992

Ramaswamy Venkataraman was a freedom fighter and later he became member of the congress party. He was four times member of Lok Sabha and also served as Defence Minister and Finance Minister of India. He was elected as vice president of India before becoming president of India.

 

9th President

Shankar Dayal Sharma

Term – 25 July 1992 to 25 July 1997

Shankar Dayal Sharma was born in Bhopal and was ninth president of India. Before becoming president, he had hold many important position in his political career such as Chief Minister of Bhopal from 1952–1956, and Cabinet Minister for a term from 1956 to 1967. He was also holding portfolios of Education, Law, Public Works, Industry and Commerce, National Resources and Separate Revenue. He was vice president of India during the tenure of Ramaswamy Venkataraman. Shankar Dayal Sharma was also the president of Indian national Congress during 1972–1974.

 

10th President

Kocheril Raman Narayanan

Term – 25 July 1997 to 25 July 2002

Kocheril Raman Narayanan famous as K.R Narayanan was tenth president. He was first president coming from Dalit community. He was the kind of working president and was very much active in Government.

Before being elected as president he had been India’s ambassador to many countries including the USA, Japan, UK, China, and Turkey. He also served as cabinet minister.

11th President

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Term – 25 July 2002 to 25 July 2007

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was one of the most famous Presidents of India. He is an inspiration for young generation. He was a famous scientist who devoted most of his life to science. During his career Kalam worked with organizations like Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He was very much involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. He was known as ‘Missile man of India’ and People’s President.

 

12th President

Pratibha Patil

Term – 25 July 2007 to 25 July 2012

Pratibha Devi Patil is the first and the only Lady president of India. She is the former member of Indian National Congress and had held the position of Governor of Rajasthan state before becoming twelfth president of India.

 

13th President

Pranab Mukherjee

Term – 25 July 2012 to 25 July 2017

Pranab Mukherjee is thirteenth in the list of presidents of India. He was member of Indian national Congress before becoming the president. During his political career, he had served at various key positions during government of congress. He hold positions including Leader of the Rajya Sabha (between 1980 and 1985) and as the Defence Minister (between 2004 and 2006), Minister of External Affairs (between 2009 and 2012) and as the Finance Minister of India (between 2009 and 2012).

 

14th President

Ram Nath Kovind

From 25 July 2017 to Current

Ram Nath Kovind is the current president of India. He became President on 25 July, 2017. During his political career, he has served as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006 and Governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017. He is the second dalit president of India after K R Narayanan.
