India’s first rural LED street lightning project is going to start in Andhra Pradesh

Energy Efficiency Services Ltd in collaboration with a French agency named Agence Française de Development (AFD) which is funding the project is going to retrofit street lights of gram Panchayats in seven districts of Andhra Pradesh. This is the first project in India of installing LED lights in streets of rural areas under the center government project named Street Lighting National Project (SLNP). There are total ten lakh street lights which will be replaced by the LED lights.

The EESL will be responsible for all types of maintenance and warranty in these gram panchayat for a period of ten years.

Benefits:

This project will have many benefits in terms of environment and energy savings. The project is estimated to save approximately 147 million units of electricity annually in gram panchayats. Because these lights consume lesser power so, it is estimated that these LED lights will be able to save 88.2 crore per annum.

It is also good for environment saving purpose as there will be considerable amount of reduction in  CO2 emissions. According to the estimate, it will reduce 12 crore tonnes of CO2 emissions as compared to conventional lightning systems.

It was Andhra Pradesh which first of all looked for help from EESL to replace their conventional street lights with LED lights in Visakhapatnam after being hit by the Hudhud cyclone.

Till now more than 23 lakh conventional lights of street have been changed with LED lights in 21 states of the country.
